Which one is better?
Neither. They solve different problems. If your walls are closed, injection foam is the only one of the two that can reach the cavity without demolition. If the framing is open, spray foam is usually the stronger choice.
Can I use spray foam in my existing finished walls?
Not without opening them. Spray foam has to be applied to a surface it can bond to, which means removing drywall or siding. That is exactly why injection foam exists.
Which has the higher R-value?
Closed cell spray foam has the highest R-value per inch. In an existing finished wall that comparison is academic, because getting closed cell in there means gutting the wall first.
Which costs less?
For a finished existing home, injection foam almost always costs less overall, because the price of spray foam in that situation includes demolition and reconstruction.
