Spray Foam Insulation

What it is, and when it is the right call

Spray foam is applied to open framing, where it expands on contact and bonds to the surfaces around it. That single step does two jobs at once: it insulates, and it air seals. For rim joists, crawl spaces, cathedral ceilings and new construction, that combination is hard to beat.

What you get

Open cell and closed cell

Open cell is lighter, more flexible and a good sound absorber, typically used in interior walls and ceilings. Closed cell is denser, delivers a higher R-value per inch, and acts as a vapor retarder, which is what you want at a rim joist or in a crawl space. We specify the one the assembly calls for rather than defaulting to whichever is cheaper.

Rim joists and crawl spaces

The rim joist is a small area that leaks disproportionately, and it is the single best spray foam target in most older homes. Crawl spaces are the other one: sealing and insulating the perimeter turns a cold, damp buffer zone into part of the conditioned envelope.

Cathedral ceilings and knee walls

Assemblies with no attic above them have no room for depth, so R-value per inch matters. Closed cell foam gets the assembly to target in the space available, and seals the air path at the same time.

Where spray foam is not the answer

We will tell you when it is not. A standard vented attic floor is almost always better served by air sealing plus blown-in at a fraction of the cost, and closed wall cavities in an existing home are an injection foam job, not a spray foam job.

Where we install it

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between open cell and closed cell spray foam?

Open cell is lighter and more vapor permeable with a lower R-value per inch. Closed cell is denser, has a higher R-value per inch, and resists vapor. The right one depends on the assembly, and we specify it in the estimate.

Do I need to leave the house during spray foam installation?

For most interior spray foam work, occupants should be out of the work area during application and for the manufacturer-specified re-entry period afterwards. You get that window in writing before the job.

Is spray foam better than injection foam for my walls?

For open framing, spray foam. For finished walls in an existing home, injection foam, because it goes in without removing your drywall. Our injection versus spray foam page compares them side by side.

Does spray foam add structural strength?

Closed cell foam adds measurable rigidity to a wall assembly. That is a secondary benefit, not a reason to choose it on its own.
